Title: Warreniana; with Notes, Critical and Explanatory, by the Editor of a Quarterly Review.
Description: London, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green, 1824 . First edition. Hardback. An especially scarce first edition of William Frederick Deacon's most-known work, an entertaining parody of contemporary writing. The first edition. Bound in the publisher's original paper-covered boards. An amusing work written by English author and journalist, William Frederick Deacon. Written in the 1820's when the author was experiencing difficulty in his career, taking a sabbatical in South Wales. During this time, Deacon wrote to his mentor, Sir Walter Scott, who encouraged him to pursue a different, more steady career; advice which was ultimately ignored.'Warreniana' is a textual parody set in a world where a selection of the countries most well-known Romantic authors all work as promoters for a very trivial product, being the fictional boot polish manufacturer Robert Warren. With writings from the point of view of Wordsworth, Walter Scott, and others. Deacon explores the nature of contemporary writing, providing an important commentary on Romanticism. At the time of publication, this work was rather well-received, with The Monthly Review praising the "considerable vivacity and success".With the bookplate of Anne and F. G. Renier, collector of children's books, who gave their collection of literature to the V & A Museum. Bound in the publisher's original paper-covered boards. Externally, sound, with rubbing and some bumping to the extremities. Joints are cracked, with the front board detached. A little loss to the extremities and the spine, with slight chipping and discolouration to spine label. Bookplates and ink inscription to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with the odd mark. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
