Title: A Faggot of French Sticks; Containing a Series of Descriptive Sketches of the Principal Public Institutions of Paris, and of the System of Instruction of the Various Branches of the French Army.
Description: London, John Murray, 1855. Cloth. Francis Bond Head's two volume account of his time in Paris, bound into one volume. The third edition. Two volumes bound into one. In the publisher's original cloth. This autobiographical work was written by Francis Bond Head and provides an account of his time in Paris in 1851. During his stay, he avoided the recommendations he had received from acquaintances of things to do in the city, and decided instead on entertaining himself as a true Parisian. He never went to the theatre, and only when into a café once, as well as avoiding receiving or paying visits. In these two volumes, Head notes the life of the poor in Paris, various streets and gardens, the railway, the post-office, his lodgings, washing-boats, and prisons. It is a fascinating snapshot of life in the heart of France in the mid-nineteenth century. In the publisher's original cloth. Externally generally smart with fading to the spine, wear to the extremities of the boards and marks to the boards including damp stains to the head of the boards. Marks to the endpapers. Internally generally firmly bound with strain between the front blanks and the title page. Pages generally bright with occasional light spotting, heavier to the front and rear. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
