This collection of fables contains 'The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter', a tale about a Monk who meets a young girl who is shunned by the community for being the hangman's daughter, who he then becomes close to. The story was inspired by Richard Voss' German tale, 'Der Mönch von Berchtesgaden', and was first written and translated from that German tale, by Adolphe De Castro, who took the tale to Ambrose Bierce to rework and improve. The story originally had a happy ending, but was changed the ending to a tragic one, and though the idea of retaining its happy ending was broached to Bierce by Castro, he refused.
