The second edition, published the year after the first. Bound in the publisher's original boards, with a contemporary spine and the original spine label retained.Very scarce work. Written anonymously, although largely attributed to William Greenwood, author of the 'Vale of Apperley&apos. This unique collection was intended as a commentary on the 'prodigies of the Bench and the Bar', shedding light to a selection of lesser-known figures of the nineteenth-century judicial system. Included in this group is William Garrow, described as 'a very able advocate', known for coining the now famous phrase "innocent until proven guilty". The frontispiece has been removed and replaced with a hand drawn pen-and-ink illustration, with another illustration adhered to page 99, not mentioned in other copies of the work held institutionally. Minor ink corrections to spelling and punctuation to page 127, 135 and 136, although it is not known who has made these amendments. With bookplates of John Sparrow and J. O. Edwards. Bound in the publisher's original boards, with a contemporary spine and the original spine label retained. Endpapers renewed. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing causing a little loss to board extremities. Spine label is a little chipped and discoloured. Hinges are slightly strained, but holding firm. Crack to front joint with backstrip lifting a little. Bookplates to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright, with the odd spot and ink annotation. Illustrations tipped-in to the page facing the title page and page 99. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
