Title: The Portfolio of the Martyr-Student
Description: London; Chester, Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green; Poole & Boult , 1830 . First edition. Hardback. The first edition of this exceptionally scarce collection of poetry, a presentation copy, inscribed "with the author's best regards". The first and only edition of the work. Bound in paper-covered boards, with the spine label and the original blanks retained. Extremely scarce. Inscribed by the author to the front blank, stating "To R. Lloyd Esq. With the author's best regards. Chester 1830", referring to the location of the printing. A collection of poetry, written anonymously, although attributed to English poet Thomas Bradford. Told from the point of view of a 'Martyr-Student', inspired by their time spent living in Germany for a two month period. The collection was mentioned in The Monthly Review from 1830 (Volume 14 of the 3rd Series), stating "The writer of them, he would have us believe, was a German youth of intense poetical feeling, who, upon his removal to a university, was so ambitious of distinguishing himself in his pursuits, that he fell a martyr to them.". This review describes Bradford as "a man who knew not how to cool the fires that burned in his breast". With the bookplate to J. O. Edwards. Bound in paper-covered boards, with the spine label and the original blanks retained. Externally, lovely, with light bumping and the odd mark. Spine label is a little chipped and discoloured. Endpapers renewed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Author's ink inscription to front blank. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
