His novel The Narrow Road, included in this set, won the 2014 Man-Booker Prize. The Narrow Road received praise for it's adept navigation of harrowing subject matter: namely, the experiences of a Far East Prisoner of War during the construction of the Burma Railway who is plagued by memories of an affair with his uncle's wife. Wanting is Flanagan's fifth novel which entwines two stories: that of Charles Dickens, his interest in the young actress Ellen Ternan, and their common involvement in his and Wilkie Collins' play about the Franklin Expedition, and that of the long term impact of the colonial violence that resulted from the 19th century British presence in Tasmania on Mary, or Mathinna, the adopted child of Sir John Franklin and his wife. First Person is the story of a ghost writer who is haunted by his subject: Australia's biggest conman.
