This intriguing work was compiled from transcriptions taken by various collectors, including Toldervey and Hackett, with the editor including only those inscriptions that he deemed most worthy of preservation. Comprised of epitaphs of various people, both well-known and anonymous, from locations including Westminster Abbey, St Pauls and others. With an essay on epitaphs written by English author, Dr Samuel Johnson.With an ink inscription and bookplate from Benjamin Sharpe. Bound in full calf. Externally, generally smart, with slight rubbing to joints and extremities. Joints are beginning to crack, with the boards somewhat tender, particularly to volume II. Bookplate to front paste down and ink inscription to front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright, with light handling marks and the odd spot. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
