After a stint of being institutionalised for insanity, Cowper recovered and began focusing on writing religious works. He was strongly against slavery, using his poems to try and support the Abolitionist campaign.Many of the poems published in this work were written on recovery of Cowper's attack of insanity, where he believed he was eternally condemned to hell.
