Title: History of Europe from the Commencement of the French Revolution in Mdcclxxxix to the Restoration of the Bourbons in Mdcccxv
Description: Edinburgh and London, William Blackwood and Sons, 1853-56. Leather. An illustrated set of Archibald Alison's important study on the history of Europe, from 1789 to 1815. Thirteen volumes bound in six.The ninth edition.Archibald Alison's idea for this history was born when he was travelling France in 1814. He discusses prominent and path-changing events that happened in Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth century, and the lead up to each event. These include the Napoleonic Wars and the Reign of Terror, events which impacted the entirety of Europe. The work is regarded as the first scholarly English study on the French Revolution. It contains a wealth of information on the tumultuous period in history, and is written in a lively and wordy style. Though is was wordy, it was a huge commercial success, being revised and reprinted many times in the nineteenth century, as well as being translated into French, German, and Arabic. Alison aimed to educate people on the French Revolution, and to right the erroneous opinions which had spread in the aftermath. He believed that the central failure in France was the reluctance of the ruling classes to stand up to popular intimidation. He examines the political state of England, and looks at revolution in England. The work was considered to be a Bible for the Tory party, with nostalgia for ancient constitution and pragmatism.Written by Archibald Alison, a Scottish advocate and historian.
