Ben Jonson; H. C. Hart [editor] - The Alchemist

Title: The Alchemist
Description: London, The De La More Press, 1903. Cloth. A smart copy of this limited edition printing of Jonson's comedy The Alchemist, from The King's Library series. The King's Library - De La More Press Quartos. Limited to four hundred and eighty copies on hand-made paper. With a vignette title. A comedy first performed in 1610 by the King's Men, this piece is generally considered Jonson's best and most characteristic comedy. The fulfilment of the classical unities and vivid depiction of human folly have made it one of the few Renaissance plays, other than the works of Shakespeare, with a continuing life on stage. When an outbreak of plague in London forces a gentleman, Lovewit, to flee temporarily to the country, he leaves his house under the sole charge of his butler, Jeremy. Jeremy uses the opportunity to use the house as the headquarters for fraudulent acts. Written by Benjamin Jonson, an English playwright and poet considered a great influence on English poetry and stage comedy. Edited by H. C. Hart. In the original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, smart with light bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with light spotting to the endpapers. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
