The first edition of this very scarce work.A poem lauding the triumphs of Francis Drake, and how he helped to develop the naval power of England.Drake was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world, and only the second person ever to have done it. Undertaken between 1577 and 1580, this was an important historical maritime event, authorised by Queen Elizabeth I. This poem, by R. Grymbald Bigsby, sings the praises of Drake. His family owned Drake's own astrolabe, before presenting it to the Royal Hospital of Greenwich. Label of the Nottingham Mechanics Institution Reference Library to the front paste down, and the Nottingham Public Libraries to the recto of the front free endpaper. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the extremities. Spine and extremities are a little faded. Institutional label and bookseller's label to the front paste down, and institutional label to the recto of the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with scattered spots and handling marks. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
