Founded in 1859 by William and Robert Chambers, this encyclopaedia soon established a scholarly reputation and was well-known for its accuracy. This 1879 revised edition is spread over a complete ten volume set, with illustrations throughout the text. In the publisher's original blind-stamped cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with small marks to the boards, a little bumping to the extremities, and light shelf wear to the joints, occasionally causing small holes. Light damp staining to the boards of volumes VII, VIII, IX and X. Small ink spot to the front board of volume X. Gilt remains bright. Splitting to the cloth to the head of the front joint to volumes IV and IX. Splitting to the cloth of the head of the rear joint to volume VI. Hinges to volume I are slightly strained but remain firmly held. Front hinge to volumes II, III, IX and X are slightly strained but remain firmly held. Pages 577 to 592 to volume X are coming loose but remain intact. Otherwise, internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with spotting to the first and last few pages, and to the fore edge, affecting the occasional page.
