A bright edition of the comedies of Publius Terentius Afer, better known in English as Terence, a Roman African playwright whose works were first performed between 166 and 160 BC. Terence wrote his plays in a simple and conversational Latin, resulting in his works being used throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance to teach Latin. Written in the original Latin. This particular collection was commissioned by Eton College as a gift to scholars who had completed their studies. Published for the college by Charles Whittingham, who took over the Chiswick Press from his uncle.Inscribed to the dedication page, dated 1857, presented by Charles O. Goodford, the headmaster and provost of Eton College at the time. Bound in full calf. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the extremities, joints and spine. Small cracks to the head and tail of the front joint. Front hinge a touch strained, but holding firm. Light marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean.
