The first edition of this scarce work.Inscribed to the presentation leaf to George Milburn of Blyth, who is mentioned to page 48 as a builder.Illustrated with a colour map to the frontispiece, thirteen colour folding plates, and one colour folding map.A detailed report on the committee for examining the lifeboat models which has been submitted to compete for a premium offered by the Duke of Northumberland, Algernon Percy.Percy offered a prize of £200, £23,388 today, for a new design of a self-righting lifeboat. This competition was won by James Beeching, his design becoming the standard model for the new Royal National Lifeboat Institution fleet.The plates in this volume show detailed plans of thirteen of the entries designs, alongside a folding map showing a wreck chart of the British Isles for the year 1850.Collated, complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Cloth is discoloured and marked with some rubbing, and a damp stain to the rear board. Bumping resulting in loss to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, heavier to the head and tail of the spine. Hinges are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean, with scattered spots and handling marks, spots a little heavier to the plates. Closed tear to the presentation leaf. Small closed tears and very small chips to the folding plates, some neatly repaired. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
