Title: Transactions of the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science
Description: London, Longmans, Green and Co, 1860-1882. Cloth. A twenty-four volume collection of annual publications from the meetings of the 'National Association of the Promotion of Social Sciences' from 1859 to 1881. Twenty-four volumes. In the publisher's original cloth to the majority, with five volumes being rebacked, and three volumes bound in a later library cloth binding.Illustrated with the occasional folding plate depicting figures, floorplans and tables. This set features twenty-four volumes of the annual publications from the meetings of the 'National Association of the Promotion of Social Sciences' from 1859 to 1883. The association was a British reformist group founded in 1857 and met annually to discuss issues of public health, female education, industrial relations and penal reform. One volume features the trades' societies and strikes report which was presented at the 1860 meeting. Years 1864 and 1862 are particularly note worth for their inclusions of contributions from the noted Florence Nightingale, with her articles 'Hospital Statistics and Hospital Plans' (pp. 554-560 to 1862) and 'Note on the Aboriginal Races in Australia'(pp.552 1864). Florence Nightingale was a note worthy social reformer and founder of modern nursing, best known for her contributions to the Crimean War and military hospitals. Several volumes are from institutional libraries, with bookplates, stamps and library locations. In the publisher's original cloth to the majority, with five volumes being rebacked, and three volumes bound in a later library cloth binding. Copies in original cloth are sound with bumping to the extremities, slight marks to the boards and the odd joint starting, with wear to the head and tail of the spines with closed tears and slight loss to copies which are not rebacked. The Library bindings are excellent with only slight bumping to the extremities of the boards and library locations stamped to the spines. Lacking rear free endpaper to '1860&apos. Library bookplates to all library bindings, and the odd library stamp to the others with occasional hinges starting, and weak to the rear to 1860. Internally firmly bound with age toned pages, occasional spotting and the odd library stamp or handling mark. One folding plate neatly cut in two, with both halves present. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
