Lord Alfred Douglas - The True History of Shakespeare&Apos;S Sonnets

Title: The True History of Shakespeare&Apos;S Sonnets
Description: London, Martin Secker, 1933. First edition. Cloth. The first edition of Lord Alfred Douglas' analysis of Shakespeare's sonnets, particularly of those dedicated to the enigmatic 'Mr. W. H.' The first edition of this work, with no further edition remarks. In the publisher's original cloth binding. With a monochrome portrait frontispiece. This work offers the "true story" of Shakespeare's sonnets, being their contexts and analyses of the language used. It looks particularly at those dedicated to Mr W. H, a figure whose theorised identity is discussed in this work. From Lord Alfred Douglas, an English poet and journalist who is also noted for his turbulent affair with Oscar Wilde, with surfaced intimate notes between the two being used as evidence against Wilde and later leading to his imprisonment. Douglas references Wilde's book 'The Portrait of Mr. W. H', which was his attempt to uncover the identity of the dedicatee in his work. Although known to have been Wilde's lover, Douglas' embrace of Catholicism led to a rejection of homosexuality, this being clear in his disagreement of theories that Mr. W. H. was Shakespeare's lover. In the original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with minor rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Darkening to the spine and light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Very Good . Ill.: Not stated. Very Good .
