The 'Alfred' in the newspaper is a suburb in Ashford, and is now named Newtown.Including the issues No. 1, for Saturday 14th July 1855, and No. 88 for Saturday 14th March 1857. 'Ashford and Alfred News' was a weekly newspaper, and provided a wide array of adverts for companies, products, and services, and well as local, national, and global news. Articles include 'A New York Tragedy', regarding the murder of Dr Harvey Burdell by his mistress, Emma Cunningham, an incredibly notorious trial of the Victorian era.Providing a charming insight into life in Kent during the Victorian era. Unbound as issued, 1855 issue is unopened to the top edge. Leaves are edge worn, heavier to the 1855 issue, with closed years and small chips. Leaves are age-toned with some light spots and handling marks, heavier age-toning to the 1855 issue. Prior owner's pencil pagination to the head of the leaves of the 1855 issue.
