Doedens originally published his work in Dutch in 1554 as 'Cruydeboeck&apos.Rather than the traditional method of arranging the plants in alphabetical order, the herbal divided the plant kingdom into six groups, based on their properties and affinities.At the time of publication, this work was the most translated book after the Bible. It became a work of worldwide renown, used as a reference book for two centuries.An incomplete copy, as is common to see.Register runs as: [1] *iii-*iiii, *6, A-M6, N4, O-3A6, 3C-3G6, 3H-3I4, 3K-3X6, 3Y3. Thus this copy lacks the title page, *ii, *v, N5, N6, gathering 3B, and the final leaf of the index. Leaf with the portrait, *iiiiii, is bound before lead *iii. Rebound in a calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing. Spine is a little faded, with light fading to the head of the boards. Light marks to the boards and spine. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with the occasional spot and handling marks. Textblock is a little edge worn, heavier the first and last few pages, with small chips. Chipping and loss is heavier to the final leaves of the index. Ink to the portrait. Tidemark to the top edge of the textblock. The occasional ink notes to the margins. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
