He was also an author and drama critic. This is his best known work, originally published in Russian Word in 1915, translated into English with an introduction by Stephen Graham. This work contains Doroshevitch's account of the hardships suffered by Russian refugees during World War I in August and September 1915. Vlas travelled from Moscow to meet the oncoming refugees, recording what he witnessed along the way. His title was inspired by the crosses which marked the burial sites of people who died at the roadside. In the publisher's original pictorial paper boards.
