Description: London, George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode, 1847. Leather. A very scarce copy of this prayer for the General Fast Day of Wednesday 24 March by Royal Proclamation. Very scarce work. The prayer issued by Royal Proclamation to be used on the General Fast Day starting 12 midday on Wednesday 24 March 1847. In response to the famine ravaging Ireland, the United Kingdom declared a National Day of Fast and Humiliation which, as the proclamation from Queen Victoria suggests, was supposed to remove those "heavy judgements which our manifold sins and provocations have most justly deserved". Official days of fast and humiliation have a long history in Britain, with this date of fasting was used annually for various reasons after this date. Bound in full crushed morocco. Externally, sound with rubbing and light loss to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with light scattered spotting to the endpapers only. With the original ribbon place holder. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
