The first edition of this scarce work. In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding. With an illustrated frontispiece and a contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper, dated 1890. 'Tempted or, The Old Lady's Prize' follows the mischievous actions of one girl after a painting competition with a prize of five guineas is held at Miss Simpson's seminary for young ladies. Published anonymously, this work is from Harriette Emma Burch, who frequently wrote fiction for the Religious Tract Society.Undated, dated from an identical copy at the British Library. With eight leaves of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding. Externally, smart. With slight rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Slight discolouration to the spine and marks to the boards. Front hinge is mostly failed save the tail, which is tender but holding. Internally, generally firmly bound.
