This spurred him on to write 'The State of Prisons' (1777), providing detailed instruction on improvements within the system. This biographical work details the system before and after the reforms, as well as the reaction of the public. Written by English historian William Hepworth Dixon. With the bookplate of Horatio Noble Pym, a prominent book collector and editor. Bound in the publisher's cloth. Externally, generally smart, with light bumping to the extremities and a little fading to the cloth. Bookplate to front paste down and tipped-in signature to front endpaper.
