Published in four series between 1851-4. This wonderfully illustrated collection features some of the artwork presented by politician Robert Vernon, to the National Gallery in 1847. Altogether, Vernon entrusted 157 paintings and 7 sculptures by British artists to the National Gallery, many of which are printed and described in these volumes. The First Series is illustrated with forty plates, with the Second Series containing thirty-nine. Collated, complete. Edited by Victorian-era journalist, Samuel Carter Hall, who was best known for his editorial role working for The Art Journal. Bound in half morocco with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with slight rubbing to the extremities and light marking to cloth. Fading to the cloth, largely to the head and tail of the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with light scattered spotting, mainly to the first and last pages. Very Good . Ill.: Various. Very Good .
