His novels show the grimy side of poverty and prosperity in Victorian England, showing poor social conditions alongside repulsive characters.Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne, most often known by his pen-name 'Phiz&apos. As Phiz, he illustrated many of Dickens' novels, including 'David Copperfield', 'Dombey and Son', and 'Bleak House', as well as illustrating for 'Punch' throughout his life. In a rebacked half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the extremities. Spine is a little discoloured with light rubbing. Internally, generally firmly bound, a few pages working loose, with page 607-608 and plate facing page 608 are detached but present. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots.
