London') to the verso of the front free end paper to each volume. James Franck Bright (1832-1920) was a British historian and Master of University College, Oxford. He wrote A History of England as a textbook for his students at Marlborough College, where he was Head of the Modern Department in the late nineteenth century. This two-volume set contains Period I of Bright's history of England, covering Medieval monarchy from the departure of the Romans to the reign King Richard III (449-1485). Illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty-two plates, six of which are in colour, to Volume I; illustrated with a frontispiece and nineteen plates, three of which are in colour, and six folding maps to the rear, one of which is in colour, to Volume II. From the library of W. A. Foyle at Beeleigh Abbey, with his morocco bookplate to the front paste down of each volume. William Foyle was the co-founder of Foyles bookshop, founding the leading bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex, which became home to his library, one the largest private libraries in England. In half calf bindings. Externally in lovely condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with occasional pencil markings. Maps and plates are in excellent condition. Fine .
