A leather-bound first edition of Volume I of the new series of The Art Journal, recording the 1862 International Exhibition. The first edition of this work in a full calf binding, with gilt detailing to the boards, spine and square. All edges gilt. Ink inscription to the front blank: 'To Michael, a man of honour and integrity and above all a friend, from Mamdouh el Bisharat. July, 1961.' The Art Journal was a notable nineteenth-century art magazine. Its editor at the time was Samuel Carter Hall. Illustrated with an engraved title page, twenty-four plates, and illustrations throughout the text of items on display at the 1962 International Exhibition, which signalled a new era in design, industry and technology. Collated, complete. The International Exhibition of 1862 was a world's fair hosted in South Kensington, London. Items displayed included the first plastic, all manner of machinery and tools, the electric telegraph, submarine cables, cotton miles, furniture and porcelain. Particularly of note were the production of ice by an early refrigerator and William Morris's decorative pieces. In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart, though somewhat faded with faint marks to the boards. Cracking to the front joint. Internally, firmly bound.
