Crowe and Cavalcaselle were a well-known writing duo in the nineteenth century, co-authoring many works of art history, with a particular reference to Cavalcaselle's country of birth, Italy. This collection is comprised of the following: 'A New History of Painting in Italy' (1864-6), the first edition, illustrated with ninety-nine plates. Complete in three volumes. 'A History of Panting in North Italy' (1871), the first edition, illustrated with thirty-three plates. Complete in two volumes. 'The Early Flemish Painters' (1872), the second edition, illustrated with seventeen plates, some of which are folding. 'The Life and Times of Titian' (1881), the second edition, illustrated with nineteen plates. Complete in two volumes.'Raphael: His Life and Works' (1882-5), the first edition. Complete in two volumes.Collated, complete. With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedown. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England. With two additional bookplates of Alfred and Otto Beit, who were Anglo-German gold and diamond mining brothers, based in South Africa. Bound in a half crushed morocco with cloth to the boards. Externally, very good, with slight rubbing to joints and extremities, and to the head and tail of the spines, causing a little loss to some volumes. The odd mark to boards. Hinges are a touch strained in places, but generally firm. Bookplate to recto and verso of endpapers and to the front paste down, with a little offsetting from bookplate. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the odd handling or pencil mark. Very Good . Ill.: Various. Very Good .
