The first edition of this very scarce work.This volume details Elijah Impey's speech delivered at the bar of the House of Commons on the 4th February 1788.The speech regards Impey's impeachment, after presiding at the trial of Maharaja Nandakumar in 1775. The trial went down in history, with Impey being impeached alongside Warren Hastings due to their conduct of the case. Both Impey and Hastings were accused by Thomas Babington Macaulay of commiting 'judicial murder', by having Nandakumar unjustly hanged.Bookplate of Member of Parliament Henry B. H. Beaufoy to the front paste down, a contemporary of Impey.Three pages of adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, a little worn. Front joint is strained, rear hinge is starting. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Cloth to the joints is fraying. Light marks and rubbing to the boards and spine. Spine label is a little rubbed. Hinges are strained. Bookplate and ink inscription to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots.
