With a portrait frontispiece to volume one. A record of the life and letters of William Bewick, an English painter. Born in Darlington, the son of an upholsterer, who went to London to train under the painter Benjamin Haydon at the age of twenty. Later working as a copyist, he was so successful that Sir Thomas Lawrence sent him to copy Michelangelo's frescoes of the Sistine Chapel in Rome in 1826. Edited by Thomas Landseer, a British artist best known for his engravings and etchings. Publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume two. In the original brown cloth binding. Externally, smart with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities resulting in minor loss of the cloth at the board edges. Minor fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Small splits to the cloth at the head and tail of the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Minor age toning to the endpapers.
