Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, was a statesman, diplomat and man of letters.Left without a legitimate heir to his lands and property, Lord Chesterfield acted to protect his hereditary interests by adopting his distant cousin and godson, Philip Stanhope as his heir and successor to the title of Earl of Chesterfield.These letters to him were published posthumously and served as a handbook on becoming a gentleman in the 18th century, offering advice on how a gentleman should interpret social codes of etiquette and good manners. Some letters are in French and Latin, which was the Earl's way of ensuring refinement in the grasp of other languages.With a bookplate of one Lewis Harcourt, 1st Viscount Harcourt, a British Liberal Party politician who held the Cabinet post of Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1910-1915. Harcourt acted as a Trustee of the British Museum, Wallace Collection, the London Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery, which has a portrait of him. In the publisher's original half vellum binding with paper covered boards. Externally, with marks to the boards and slight discolouration to the vellum. Edgewear and light bumping to the spine head and tail. With a bookplate of one Lewis Harcourt to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound.
