Illustrated a vignette title page, illustrations throughout and decorations to each page. A medieval heroic epic poem originally written in Middle High German in the early thirteenth century. Set in the Burgundian Empire on the Rhine, the work is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the King's daughter Kriemhild's first marriage to Siegfried, a strong and courageous warrior, and Siegfried's death. The second part focuses on Kriemhild's revenge. The Nibelungenlied was considered the national epic of the Germans in the 19th and 20th centuries , with Siegfried the Dragon Slayer being viewed as a German national hero. Edited and translated by Gotthard Oswald Marbach, a German philosophy lecturer and poet. Illustrated by Eduard Bendemann, a German-Jewish painter, and Rudolf Julius Hubner, a German historical painter of the Düsseldorf school of painting. In the original full red morocco with gilt. Externally, Smart with rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound.
