Author: Richard Doyle Title: The Foreign Tour of Messrs Brown, Jones, and Robinson
Description: London, Bradbury & Evans, 1854. First edition. Cloth. The first edition of this comical tale following three men's travels across Europe, an illustrated work by Richard Doyle. The first edition of this charming work from Victorian illustrator Richard Doyle, best known for his contributions to Punch magazine, and for being the uncle of Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes. A popular Victorian work, Doyle humorously describes Brown, Jones and Robinson's travels across Europe, including to Switzerland and Italy.Illustrated with eighty leaves, printed on the verso only.Though a prolific illustrator, Doyle was known for being incredibly unreliable, once nearly losing a commission to illustrate Thackeray's 'The Newcomes', due to consistent tardiness. Notably, he designed the masthead for Punch, which was used for over a century. Collated, complete. In a rebacked cloth binding, with the original publisher's boards restored, with new endpapers. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing and marks to the boards. Minor bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some scattered spots, with a larger spot to the head of pages 22 to 37. Small closed tear to tail of a few pages. Very Good . Ill.: Richard Doyle. Very Good .
