The first edition. Bound in the publisher's paperback wraps.'Arrowsmith's Christmas Annual' was a collection of short stories and poems published by Bristol-based publishing house J. W. Arrowsmith between 1881 and 1901. Originated by J. A. Symonds', this was the first of the 'Arrowsmith's Annuals&apos. It was comprised of tales from prominent authors of the time, often being the first time a story was published. This particular collection is comprised of thirteen short stories, lending its name to the title 'Thirteen at Dinner&apos. This includes the first publication of Amelia B. Edwards' ghost story 'Was it an Illusion?', as well as this first appearance of 'The Daughter of the Stars', which was Hugh Edwards' first published story. Illustrated by George H. Edwards, H. Whatley, J. Jackson Curnock, E. C. Lavars and F. G. Lewin, with four full-page illustrations and numerous vignettes.Publisher's advertisement's to the rear. Bound in the publisher's paperback wraps. Externally, sound with soiling to the wraps and tears and chipping to the extremities. Front wrap has detached. Loss to the backstrip, with spotting to wraps. Internally, firmly bound.
