The first edition of this very scarce work.Volume II only, of a total of two volumes.A continuation of Samuel Richardson's 'Pamela', written by John Kelly'Pamela', or 'Virtue Rewarded', tells of a beautiful 15 year old, Pamela, working as a maidservant under inappropriate master Mr B. Though it was a bestseller when published, it's received criticism over time for it's seeming glorification of abuse. It's been referenced widely in literature, including in 'Jane Eyre', and 'The Haunting of Hill House&apos. This continuation sees Pamela after her marriage, up until her death.Richardson was insulted by the parodies of his novel, and felt robbed of the character. Part of his disapproval of this continuation stemmed from Kelly's making Pamela not nearly as pious as she is in Richardson's novel. One page of adverts to the rear. In a full calf binding. Externally, a little worn. Joints are strained, boards are held by cords only. Loss to the spine label. Minor bumping to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the head of the spine.
