Illustrated with an engraved title page, twelve engraved plates, and eight wood engravings in the text after drawings by G. Dodgson. Collated, complete. A charming topographical work exploring the scenery around the Whitby and Pickering railway, in the north-eastern part of Yorkshire. Henry Belcher offers descriptions to accompany the engraved illustrations. With appendixes containing an account of the murder of the monk of Whitby, a list of native plants, and an account of the opening of the railway. The artist George Haydock Dodgson (1811-1880) exhibited at the Society of British Artists from 1835 and was a member of the Old Watercolour Society. After taking sketching tours of Wales, Cumberland and Yorkshire, he mainly sketched public buildings and produced work for architects in London. He also designed plates for the "Illustrated London News". In the publisher's original cloth binding. Front board is detached but intact. Significant losses to the backstrip, which is lifting to the front joint. Light shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound.
