The extract featured in this magazine issue is introduced by Nancy Hemond Brown. Brown wrote many insightful critical essays and articles on the work of the novelist Jean Rhys (1890-1979) who is best known for Wide Sargasso Sea. In Voyage in the Dark, Rhys explores her characteristic theme of the alienation of mistreated women, based on her personal experiences. Also featured in this issue are two short stories: 'Carnation Butterfly' by Christopher Hope and 'A Stone from the Cathedral' by Zbigniew Herbert.
