Bound in full calf with blind stamped decorative borders and raised bands. Illustrated with monochrome engraved frontispieces, engraved title pages and 259 plates over Ireland 'Volumes I and II&apos. Collated complete. Engraved title piece and engraved vignettes to 'Antiquities of England and Wales' with fifty-one monochrome engraved plates to 'Volume I', eighty-five to 'Volume II', seventy-one including two folding plates to 'Volume III', sixty-eight to 'Volume IV', ninety-six to 'Volume V', Eighty-two to 'Volume VI', seventy-one to 'Volume VII' and one hundred and five to 'Volume VIII&apos. Collated complete. Collated against a copy held at the British Library. This ten volume set provides a historical study of the antiquities of England, Wales and Ireland was written by Francis Grose. Volumes 1-5 are undated to 'England and Wales', with volume six dated as 1785 beneath the imprint. Volume eight is without an edition statement and dated 1787 to the frontispiece, as usual for this set of works. 'Antiquities of Ireland' is dated 1791 to the title page, but due to the death of Grose in May of 1791, the work was continued by his friend Edward Ledwich with the preface to the first volume being dated as 1794, as usual for this work. Volume two is also dated 1791 to the title page due to its creation before the death of Grose, but is dated 1793 to the frontispiece. As standard with the first edition, the works have here been dated as 1791. Bound in full calf. Externally worn with rubbing and bumping to the extremities, rubbing to the joints, marks to the boards, joints weak to most and failed to the front to volumes 'VIII and III' and to both the front and rear to 'IV, I, II, VI, XII' and only starting to XI, loss to the spine labels to all except volumes 'XI, VII, XII and IV', with back strip lifting slightly to 'IV&apos. Bookplate belonging to 'Cholmondeley Library' to the front pastedown. Front and rear hinge re-enforced with tape to 'Volume V and VIII&apos. Internally generally firmly bound with the first two blanks of 'Ireland Volume II' weak and the first two blanks to 'Volume II' disbound but present. Generally bright pages and occasional spotting and offsetting from the plates. Good Only . Ill.: None stated. Good Only .
