A very scarce copy of these pamphlets detailing an in depth investigation on the Waverley Novels of Sir Walter Scott, in presentation from the author William John Fitzpatrick. Very scarce work. With the author's presentation inscription to the title page, dated June 12th 1856. Two volumes bound into one, including: Who Wrote the Waverley Novels? Being an Investigation into Certain Mysterious Circumstances Attending their Production, and an Inquiry into the Literary Aid Which Sir Walter Scott May Have Received From Other Persons & Who Wrote the Waverley Novels? An Essay, Showing, on Evidence Amounting to Moral Demonstration, that Sir Walter Scott's Relation to Waverley, Guy Mannering, Rob Roy, The Antiquary, and The Tales of My Landlord, was, at the most, That of an Editor. Fitzpatrick commenced a series of letters to Notes and Queries in an attempt to foster a charge of unacknowledged plagiarism on Sir Walter Scott, and to claim for the novelist's brother, Thomas Scott, the chief credit for a large part of the famous Waverley series. After four letters had appeared, the editor declined to publish any more, and although Fitzpatrick continued to pursue his theory, his claim was repudiated in a letter to the Times of 5th June 1857 by the three daughters of Thomas Scott. Written by William John Fitzpatrick, an Irish historian. In the original half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Minor loss to the head of the spine and small cracks to the joints. Fading to the spine and marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with light scattered spotting, with further spotting to the first and last few pages. Minor age toning to the endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to the front endpaper. Good .
