Five volumes of a six volume set. Lacking volume I. The Italian theatre of Evaristo Gherardi, an Italian actor and playwright, who arrived in France at the beginning of the 1670s. These volumes provide a collection of the comedies and scenes performed by the King's Italian Comedians during their service, including: La Cause Des Femmes, Le Divorce, Le Marchand Dupe, Le Grand Sophy, and La Femme Venge'e. Volume II is illustrated with a frontispiece and eight plates. Volume III is illustrated with a frontispiece and seven plates, and eight pages of musical score. Volume IV is illustrated with a frontispiece and seven plates, and thirty-six pages of musical score. Volume V is illustrated with a frontispiece and seven plates, and twenty-four pages of musical score. Volume VI is illustrated with a frontispiece and seven plates, and forty pages of musical score. Previously held in the library of Francis Hutcheson, an Irish philosopher born to a family of Scottish Presbyterians who became known as one of the founding fathers of the Scottish Enlightenment. In the original brown calf binding. Externally, worn with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and marks to the boards. Loss to the front board of volume VI. Boards lightly buckled. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with light age toning to the extremities and the odd spot. Contemporary ink inscription to the title page. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. A 3" closed tear to the front endpaper of volume III. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
