At the time when this work was published her existence was widely believed, this work approaching her life as fact as it first appeared in chronicles in the thirteenth century.In the legends Joan is believed to have been a talented and learned woman who disguised herself as a man, her gender only being revealed when she gave birth during a procession, dying shortly after, either through natural causes or murder.Written by Alexander Cooke. In this work, Cooke purports to prove the existence of Joan. In a full calf binding. Externally, rubbed, mostly to the spine and extremities. Light bumping to the extremities, resulting in loss to the head of the rear board. Light discolouration to the boards. Hinges are starting but firm. Bookseller's label to the rear paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with scattered spots. A couple of chips to the frontispiece. Stamp to the title page and to the final leaf of text.
