The first Dublin edition of this work.In three volumes, without the vanishingly scarce atlas volume, and bound without the seldom seen folding chart to Volume I.Two pages of adverts to the rear of Volume III.This Dublin edition was published at the same time as the London edition; the London edition was illustrated, though this Dublin edition was only illustrated to the Atlas volume.In this work, John Hawkesworth explores several of the Royal Navy voyages to the Pacific between the years 1764 and 1771, the expeditions of the HMS Dolphin, HMS Swallow, and HMS Endeavour. Of most interest in this work is the official account of the first expedition of James Cook, in which he voyaged into the Pacific, travelling to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus, as well as charting New Zealand and Australia.The first volume in this set also includes accounts of the voyages of Commodore Byron, Captain Carteret, and Captain Wallis.In the writing and research of this work, Hawkesworth had access to about fifty-seven journals and logs of these voyages, including the journal of Joseph Banks. For over a century after this work was published it remained the most authoritative source on these voyages. In a full calf binding. Externally, a little worn, with some rubbing and light marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Loss to the heads of the spines, a smaller amount of loss to the tails. Light surface cracks to the spines of Volumes I and III. Small chips and a little rubbing to the spine labels. Crack to the head of the joints of Volume I, with a damp stain to the head of the front board. Front joint of Volume II is strained, front hinge if weak, rear joint is starting with loss of leather, rear hinge is also starting. Lighter damp stain to the boards of Volume III. Front hinge of Volumes I and III starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and generally clean with some scattered spots. Faint tide mark to the head of the first few pages of Volume III. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
