First edition, bound in a smart, full morocco with gilt detailing.Extremely scarce. Written and published by British printer and antiquarian, Samuel Bentley, who was best known for this work. Written with the assistance of Harris Nicolas, Sir Charles Young, Duffus Hardy and others. The aim of this work was to provide a view of many different aspects of English history which had been somewhat neglected. Bentley's plan was to present areas including ancient relations with Europe, the army and navy, the economy of the Royal Household, domestic and foreign public events, the lives of distinguished men, the progress of the arts, the political condition of society, and many more. A presentation copy. With the bookplate of Evelyn Philip Shirley, with a bright gold design and the phrase 'Je Suis Loyal&apos. This book was given to Shirley by one of the co-authors, Charles George Young, as stated on the verso of the front endpaper, with an ink inscription dated 1841. In a full morocco binding. Externally, very good, with light rubbing, mainly to the head and tail of the spine, with a very small hole to the head of the front joint. Light marking to the boards and darkening to the spine. A little rubbing to endpapers, with the front endpaper lifting slightly. Bookplate to the front paste down. Ink inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
