A Citizen - The City Today

Title: The City Today
Description: London, Victor Gollancz Ltd and The New Fabian Research Bureau, 1938. First edition. Paperback. A very scarce pamphlet on the UK financial services sector from 1931 to 1938, published by the New Fabian Research Bureau. The first edition of this very scarce work in the publisher's original paper wraps. The Fabian Society, formed in 1884, is a British socialist organisation created to advance the principles of social democracy and democratic socialism. This organisation has had a powerful influence on British politics, particularly on the Labour Party. This pamphlet was published by the New Fabian Research Bureau, which was formed by G. D. H. Cole independently of the Society in 1931. The NFRB included social-democratic intellectuals such as Leonard Woolf, William Robson, Hugh Dalton, and Evan Durbin. Laski was briefly involved in the early 1930s. The bureau amalgamated with the Fabian Society in 1938. This pamphlet explores the changes of "the City", or the UK financial services sector, since 1931; argues for the case against it, with discussions of policy, speculation, the Stock Exchange and power without responsibility; and suggestions for the future. With two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, in lovely bright condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean.
