He was a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. The Virgin of the Sun, first published in 1922 by Cassell, follows the voyage of the London merchant Hubert of Hastings and his mysterious associate Kari. When Hubert lands in Peru, he meets an Inca princess called Quilla. This cheap edition was published in 1931, with the printer's imprint 'Made and Printed in Great Britain by The Greycaine Book Manufacturing Company Limited, Watford, 250.231' to the last page. The Ghost Kings, first published in 1908 by Cassell, centres on Rachel Dove, a British missionary's daughter. Along with her faithful half Zulu attendant Noie, Rachel discovers the lost civilisation of the Ghost Kings. Meanwhile, Ishmael, a villainous Englishman, plots with with the Zulu king to take Rachel for his own. This cheap edition was published in 1932, with the printer's imprint 'Made and Printed in Great Britain by The Greycaine Book Manufacturing Company Limited, Watford, 250.532' to the last page. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is smart, with a little fading to the gilt of the spines and to the front board of Virgin of the Sun. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned but very clean. Dust wrappers remain bright, though both are chipped to the head and tail of the spine of the wrap. Three small closed tears to the dust wrapper to Virgin of the Sun - two the the upper extremities and one to the lower - with light shelf wear to the front of the wrap. Losses to the tail of the spine and rear of the wrap to the dust wrapper to Ghost Kings, with shelf wear to the front of the wrap and tape repairs to the verso of the wrap. Very Good .
