Illustrated with twelve colour chromolithographic plates to each volume, as well as numerous engravings in black and white in text. Collated, complete. Charles Knight retraces English history through a series of surveys from before the Norman conquest until the end of the Reign of King George II, including a sketch of the progress of society in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. A pictorial museum including plates illustrating regal, ecclesiastical, municipal, baronial, and popular antiquities, with notes about the subjects of these plates.Charles Knight was an English publisher, editor, and author, known for his contributions to such works as The Penny Magazine, The English Encyclopaedia, and others. Undated, dated through copies held at National Trust Libraries. In half calf bindings. Externally sound, with marks to the boards, and rubbing to the spines and extremities. Small loss to the head of the backstrip to Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last few pages, and for the occasional offsetting from the plates. Faint tide marks to the lower extremity of the plates, not affecting the images. Plates have intact tissue guards, though there is loss to the frontispiece's tissue guard of Volume I. Very Good .
