However, Charles did not stoop to record private scandal, though the publication caused scandals when first published, with Queen Victoria stating that she was "horrified and indignant at this dreadful and really scandalous book". Charles' journals are considered to be an incredibly valuable contribution to nineteenth century history, recording not just the public events, but the private causes that led to them. The journals were met with great public interest when they were first published, nearly ten years after Charles' death. The demand was as great in America as in England.Edited by Henry Reeve; Greville had given Reeve his diaries on his deathbed, only a few hours before he died. In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth to the boards, bound by Riviere. Externally, smart. Spines are faded. Very light rubbing to the leather. Minor bumping to the extremities. A few light marks and spots to the boards. A small amount of loss to the head of the front board of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with only a few occasional spots.
