This work was originally due for publication in 1914, but the war postponed the publication until 1924. Volume I is illustrated with thirty-four colour plates, and two monochrome plates.Volume II is illustrated with twenty-six colour plates, and three monochrome plates.Collated, complete.Frohawk was an eminent lepidopterist, the first to rear every species of British butterflies from egg to adult. His fascination with butterflies began at the age of seven, when he saw a caught a rare pale clouded yellow butterfly. This work explores the different species found in Britain, describing their habits, time of appearances, and localities.Frohawk was encouraged in this career and this work by Lord Walter Rothschild, a zoologist of the eminent Rothschild family.Three page list of subscribers to the rear of Volume II. In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, generally smart, with bumping and rubbing to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Small tear to the tail of the front board of Volume I. A few light marks to the boards. Institutional label and stamp to the recto of the front endpapers. Dust wrappers are edge worn with chips and tears, with a large amount of loss to the head of the spine of Volume I and tail of the spine and rear joint of Volume II. Light age-toning and rubbing to the wraps. Prior owner's repairs to the reverse of the dust wrappers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
