Illustrated with twenty-six delightful engravings on copper by Stephen Gooden (1892-1955), an English artist, engraver and designer of banknotes. He was associated with the Nonesuch Press in its early years, and illustrated fine editions of the King James Bible (1924) and the Odes of Anacreon (1923). These engravings were printed by A. Alexander & Sons, London, on the same paper as the text. All tissue guards present.Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was one of the most widely read French poets of the seventeenth century, best known for his Fables. In this two-volume work, La Fontaine's fables have been translated into English verse by Sir Edward Howard Marsh (1872-1953), the polymath, translator, arts patron and civil servant. Volume I contains Books I-VI; volume II contains Books VII-XII. In full vellum bindings. Externally, very smart, except for some marks to the spines. Internally, firmly bound.
