A scarce to see early edition, this being the single volume edition published in 1890, following the two volume first edition of 1889. This edition is undated, usually dated from the publisher's adverts, but this copy is bound without the adverts. After this publication in 1890 this novel went on to be published by Griffith, Farran, & Co, their edition first being published in about 1893. Publication and collation information taken from 'G. A. Henty, following a man who is falsely accused of the murder of a family member, causing him to flee to South Africa during the Kaffir War.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and seven plates, by Charles Kerr. Henty was a notable author of adventure and historical fiction, very popular with children during the Victorian era. Collated, all plates are present. Bookplate of Viscount Grey de Wilton to the front paste down. In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, a little worn. Crack and loss to the tail of the front joint. Spine is a little faded. Light rubbing to the boards and spine, heavier to the leather. Light bumping to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Bookplate to the front paste down. Spots to the paste downs and endpapers. Internally, binding is strained, gathering C is working loose. Pages are bright are bright with scattered spots, mostly to the first and last few pages.
