Written by art historian and author, Anna Brownell Jameson, who became very well known for her extensive writings on art, philosophy, feminism and travel. This work was volume four of Jameson's six-volume book series entitled 'Sacred and Legendary Art&apos. 'Legends of the Madonna' is split into Devotional and Historical Subjects, with an exploration of the Virgin before and after the birth of Christ, as well as depicting her time married to Joseph. With vignette illustrations throughout, and twenty-seven plates. Collated, complete.Ink inscription of Bertha Taylor to the front endpaper, dated June 20th 1906. In the publisher's original quarter vellum binding, with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with slight bumping to the extremities and the odd mark to the boards. Wax mark to the front board. Vellum is slightly discoloured to the spine, as typical. Spotting to endpapers. Ink inscription to front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
